Acupuncture Services
Acupuncture therapy for your pet is a pain-free way to treat a variety of conditions, primarily those dealing with inflammation and pain.
Types of Care
Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the animal’s body to stimulate healing, relieve pain, and improve physiological functions. Acupuncture was developed in China about 2,000 years ago. It is believed that when healthy, there is an abundant supply of qi (chee), or life energy that flows through a being's meridians, a network of invisible channels through the body. If the supply runs low, the body fails to maintain harmony, balance and order, and may lead to disease and illness. Acupuncture helps in treating and preventing illness by improving overall functioning of immune and organ systems.
Electroacupuncture
Electroacupuncture is a form of acupuncture where, after placement of needles in particular points, the needles are then attached to a device that generates low voltage electric pulses using small clips attached to the needles. The frequency and intensity of the impulse being delivered is adjusted based on the condition being treated.
Electroacupuncture uses two needles at time so that the impulses can pass from one needle to the other. Several pairs of needles can be stimulated simultaneously, usually for no more than 20 minutes at a time.
What Can Pet Acupuncture Treat?
Pet acupuncture is beneficial for various ailments, particularly those involving chronic pain, inflammation, and nervous system issues. It is commonly used to manage arthritis, hip dysplasia, and musculoskeletal injuries by reducing pain and improving mobility. Acupuncture can also help with neurological conditions like seizures and nerve paralysis, as well as gastrointestinal issues such as chronic vomiting and irritable bowel syndrome.
How do Animals Handle Treatment?
Most animals, including cats and rabbits, tolerate acupuncture comfortably and without distress. The needles used are exceptionally thin and are placed in areas that cause minimal discomfort. Depending on the condition being treated, needles remain in place for about 5 to 30 minutes. Many animals relax deeply during treatment and may even become sleepy, often staying calm and restful for several hours post treatment.
Caring for your Pet
Initial Treatment
During the initial visit Sharon will perform a thorough evaluation of the animal's health and medical history. She will discuss the pet's symptoms, lifestyle, and any previous treatments with you to develop a clear understanding of their condition.
A physical exam may be performed to assess areas of tension, pain, or imbalance. Sharon will explain how acupuncture works and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your pet's needs.
During this first session, the pet may experience a gentle introduction to acupuncture with a few needles placed to gauge their comfort and response. This visit sets the foundation for future treatments aimed at promoting healing and overall well-being.
Follow-on Treatment
Follow-on visits for a pet patient of record focuses on assessing progress and refining the treatment plan. Dr. Sharon will review any changes in the pet’s condition with you since the last session, including improvements, new symptoms, or lingering issues. She may adjust the acupuncture points or techniques based on the pet's response to previous treatments.
These visits often involve a quicker check-in and a more focused session, as a baseline understanding of the pet's health is already established. The goal is to build on prior progress, manage symptoms, and enhance the pet's overall comfort and well-being.
